ScAIEM Doctoral Thesis Award
The ScAIEM Doctoral Thesis Award aims to foreground high-quality research in Industrial Engineering and Management. This award showcases the depth and breadth of the field, as well as its societal relevance. The award highlights various elements that make a thesis outstanding, including originality, relevance, collaboration with other researchers, creativity, collaboration with industry and societal actors, and high-quality empirical work.
Recent Winner
2023: Dr. Viktor Werner, Linköping University, Sweden, for his thesis “Ghosts of the Past or Facilitators of the Future?” Dr. Werner’s dissertation addresses the critical issue of global goods transport emissions and the transition to electrified transportation. His research, which includes stakeholder interviews and literature studies, explores the challenges and opportunities for various industry stakeholders, including heavy vehicle manufacturers and logistics firms.

This award celebrates innovative teaching methods, impactful educational tools, collaboration in the IEM field, and dedication to student learning and engagement.
Recent Winner
2024: Associate Professor Tim Torvatn from NTNU for his exceptional contributions to the Master of Technology in Industrial Economics and Technology Management (MTIØT) program. Over the past 25 years, he has played a pivotal role in developing and managing this prestigious program, which is highly regarded in Norway. Tim is known for his innovative teaching methods, including case-based and problem-based approaches, which have inspired and engaged students. His dedication to teaching and program development has significantly shaped the MTIØT program and earned him the admiration of many graduates. Tim’s work has also been influenced by and contributed to the broader ScAIEM community.
Past Winners
2023: The Project Business Research Team at the University of Oulu, including Prof. Jaakko Kujala, Assoc. Prof. Kirsi Aaltonen, Dr. Jere Lehtinen, and Dr. Elina Jääskä. The team developed the “Project Business Game,” a virtual game-based platform for teaching project management. This innovative tool has significantly enhanced students’ understanding and application of project management methods.
